Up to 20 free first-class samples. 3-year guarantee. Crafted for 10–15+ years of enduring quality. Backed by thousands of verified 5-star UK customer reviews on Trustpilot, eKomi and Google. --- ### Engineering Superiority: Why English Blinds Last 10–15+ Years vs. 2–3 Years for Budget Alternatives While budget online made-to-measure blinds often cut corners using thin 25mm tubes that bow over wide spans, brittle unstabilised plastic clutches that snap, and lightweight fabrics that fray, English Blinds engineers every product for long-term structural integrity: * **Anti-Sag Roller Tubes:** Heavy-gauge 32mm, 40mm, and 45mm reinforced aluminium roller tubes prevent bowing across wide window spans. * **Commercial-Grade Mechanisms:** UV-stabilised Acetal plastic clutches, stainless steel internal springs, and 1:2.5 reduction gear options ensure smooth, reliable lifting year after year. * **Reinforced Venetian Headrails & Slats:** Solid 2.8mm HSPVC polymer slats (supported by metal headrail inserts and bottom-bar lifting pulley wheels on widths ≥1401mm) and 2.75mm–3.00mm kiln-dried hardwoods resist warping, twisting, and cord wear. ## 1. Material & Environment Compatibility ### 3.1 Moisture & Bathroom Suitability - **100% Waterproof / High Humidity Compatible:** - **PVC / Vinyl Roller & Vertical Blinds:** 100% non-porous, waterproof, wipe-clean, odour-resistant, and treated with an anti-fungal coating to prevent black mould and bacterial growth. - **Faux Wood Venetian Blinds (HSPVC):** Solid non-porous polymer slats withstand extreme humidity, steam, condensation, and direct water splashes without swelling, peeling, cracking, or warping. - **Aluminium Venetian Blinds:** Corrosion-resistant, rust-proof stove-enamelled aluminium alloy with waterproof paint. *(Note: The fabric lift cords are not 100% waterproof, so avoid zones with heavy direct water splashing or excessive cooking grease).* - **Not Suitable for Damp / Wet Environments:** - **Real Wood Venetian Blinds (Basswood, Bamboo, Abachi):** Natural timber will absorb moisture and warp, twist, crack, stain, or develop mildew in damp/wet rooms. If splashed, wipe immediately, lower the blind completely with slats horizontal, remove from brackets, and dry flat on a non-absorbent hard surface out of direct sunlight. - **Roman Blinds:** Natural woven fabrics will shrink, discolour, or develop mildew if exposed to steam or humidity. Dry clean only. ### 3.2 Thermal Limits, Insulation & Natural Material Characteristics - **Faux Wood Venetian Temperature Limit (55°C):** Do not install where temperatures reach or exceed 55°C. Prolonged exposure to ≥55°C softens PVC slats and causes permanent warping/deformation. Never place against unshielded radiators, open fires, or inside hot, unventilated conservatories. Leave slats slightly tilted open during intense heat to maintain airflow, and never hang secondary closed curtains directly over faux wood blinds. - **Real Wood Heat Stability & Bamboo Characteristics:** Kiln-dried hardwoods (Basswood, Abachi) are thermally stable and resist heat warping unless moisture is absorbed and rapidly drawn out by intense sun. Bamboo is a softer, sustainable natural material; wider blinds may exhibit slight slat flexibility, minor bowing at the bottom when raised, natural knots, horizontal grain variations, and uneven paint absorption across the slat surface. - **Thermal Insulation Ranking:** Thick solid timber (2.2mm–3.0mm), dense HSPVC faux wood (2.8mm), lined Roman blinds, and multi-layer thermal-backed roller blinds provide strong thermal insulation against winter conductive heat loss and summer solar gain. Thin 0.21mm aluminium slats provide basic shading when closed but lower thermal insulation than wood or PVC. ### 3.3 Fire Retardancy (Commercial & Domestic Standards) - **BS 5867 Part 2 Type B Certified:** All PVC/Vinyl Roller and Vertical blinds, Faux Wood HSPVC blinds, and designated FR-rated woven polyester Roller and Vertical ranges comply with British Standard BS 5867-2: Type B flammability requirements. - **Compliance & Durability:** Fully legal and compliant for UK landlords, commercial offices, schools, hotels, hospitals, and domestic kitchens (above sinks or near cookers). Flame-retardant properties are inherent to the treated yarn/polymer structure and do not wash or wipe off during routine cleaning. ### 3.4 Solar & Optical Performance (Roller Blind Fabrics) *Definitions: Ts = Solar Transmittance (% of solar heat energy passing through) | Rs = Solar Reflectance (% of solar heat energy reflected away) | As = Solar Absorptance (% of solar heat energy absorbed) | Tv = Visual Light Transmittance (% of visible light passing through) | UV Block = % of harmful UV rays blocked.* | Fabric Category | Colour Tone | Ts (%) | Rs (%) | As (%) | Tv (%) | UV Block (%) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Blackout (100% Opaque)** | Light (Whites, Creams, Light Beiges) | 0% | 55–75% | 25–45% | 0% | 100% | | **Blackout (100% Opaque)** | Medium (Greys, Taupes, Mid-Blues) | 0% | 35–55% | 45–65% | 0% | 100% | | **Blackout (100% Opaque)** | Dark (Blacks, Charcoals, Navys) | 0% | 5–20% | 80–95% | 0% | 100% | | **Light Filtering / Dimout** | Light (Whites, Creams, Light Beiges) | 10–35% | 55–75% | 5–20% | 5–35% | 95–100% | | **Light Filtering / Dimout** | Medium (Greys, Taupes, Mid-Blues) | 2–10% | 35–55% | 40–65% | 1–10% | 100% | | **Light Filtering / Dimout** | Dark (Blacks, Charcoals, Navys) | 0–2% | 5–25% | 75–95% | 0–1% | 100% | | **Moisture Resistant PVC** | Light (Whites, Creams) | 0% | 70–85% | 15–30% | 0% | 100% | | **Moisture Resistant PVC** | Medium (Greys, Stones, Colours) | 0% | 35–65% | 35–65% | 0% | 100% | | **Moisture Resistant PVC** | Dark (Blacks, Anthracites) | 0% | 5–25% | 75–95% | 0% | 100% | --- ## 4. Definitive Q&As ### Measuring, Sizing & Bay Windows - **Q: What is the difference between Exact Size, Recess Size, and Fabric Size when ordering?** - **A:** When `Recess Size` is selected, automatic factory deductions are made so the blind fits inside the recess (approx. −5mm off bracket-to-bracket width on Rollers; −10mm width and −10mm drop on Romans). `Exact Size` is manufactured to the exact dimensions supplied with zero deductions (for outside-recess fitting, add 200mm/20cm total width and drop for a 100mm/10cm overlap per edge, or +100mm drop if resting on a protruding sill). On Roller blinds, the operating mechanism and brackets make the overall bracket-to-bracket width 34mm–35mm wider than the `Fabric Size` (43mm wider on Day & Night and Twist Fit Rollers). - **Q: How do I measure if there are tiles, dado rails, or picture rails inside my window recess?** - **A:** For Venetian, Wooden, Faux Wood, Roman, and Vertical blinds, measure the distance between the tiles (the narrowest point) as your recess width. For Roller and Day & Night blinds, measure both the top of the recess and between the tiles: if the difference is <30mm, order the top measurement as `Recess Size`; if the difference is >30mm, deduct 5mm from the width between the tiles and order as `Fabric Size`. - **Q: How do I measure for a replacement roller blind?** - **A:** Measure the total width of your existing blind (including the brackets/fittings from outer edge to outer edge) and the drop, and select `Exact Size` when ordering. - **Q: Are roller blinds suitable for square bay windows?** - **A:** Roller and Day & Night blinds are generally not recommended for square bay windows unless the window has wide corner mullions. Because the fabric is 34mm–43mm narrower than the bracket width, there will be uncovered glass gaps at the corners (especially noticeable with blackout fabrics). Wooden, Faux Wood, Aluminium Venetian, Roman, or Vertical blinds are recommended instead. - **Q: How do I calculate width and drop deductions for Square and Angled Bay Windows?** - **A:** First, calculate **Dimension A** = Blind Depth + Window Handle/Vent Protrusion (use just the Blind Depth from Section 2.1 if there are no protruding handles). - **Square Bay Windows:** Measure all 3 window widths directly into the corners. Deduct **Dimension A** from both the Left and Right blind widths. Deduct 10mm from the Centre blind width for Venetian, Wood, Faux Wood, Roman, and Vertical blinds (or deduct 4mm for Roller and Day & Night blinds). Order all blinds as `Exact Size`. - **Angled Bay Windows:** Mark **Dimension A** from the back edge of two pieces of paper placed edge-to-edge. Place them on the sill either side of each bay corner against the frame and slide them together until the marks meet. Mark the frame where the paper corners touch and measure between your marks to get the `Exact Size` widths. - **Bay Window Drops:** Measure the drop in 3 places and use the smallest measurement. For **Vertical Blinds only**, deduct 12mm from the measured drop and select `Exact Size` when ordering so the louvres do not drag on the sill. - **Q: Can Day & Night blinds be cut to size at home?** - **A:** No. Trimming Day & Night blinds at home is strongly discouraged because the double-layered fabric loop requires factory precision to keep the horizontal stripes aligned and prevent fraying. ### Light Control, Privacy & Blackout Performance - **Q: Do Blackout Roller, Vertical, Roman, and Venetian blinds block 100% of light?** - **A:** Blackout roller and vertical fabrics (and PVC slats) are 100% opaque with 0% light transmission through the material itself. However: - **Recess-fitted Roller blinds** have an approx. 17mm–21.5mm hardware gap on each side where a halo of light can enter. To minimise light leakage, order as `Exact Size` and face-fix outside the recess with a 50mm–100mm overlap on each edge using `Standard Roll`. - **Venetian, Wood, and Faux Wood blinds** provide high room-darkening and total line-of-sight privacy when closed, but are not 100% blackout as ambient light filters through ladder cord routing holes and slat overlaps (selecting decorative fabric tapes helps cover cord holes). - **Vertical blinds** have a small clearance gap between the top of the louvres and the headrail to allow 180° rotation. - **Roman blinds with Blackout (BO) lining** use blockout tape over the internal rod pockets so zero needle pinholes are visible across the face fabric. - **Q: Can people see through light-filtering or Day & Night blinds at night when indoor lights are on?** - **A:** Light-filtering roller fabrics provide daytime privacy while letting sunlight in, but at night with indoor lights on, silhouettes and shapes may be slightly visible from outside. On Day & Night blinds, aligning the solid opaque stripes blocks the view at night, whereas leaving the sheer stripes exposed allows visibility into the room. Fully closed Wood, Faux Wood, Aluminium Venetian, Roman (lined), and Blackout/PVC blinds provide complete night-time privacy. - **Q: What is the difference between Standard Roll and Reverse Roll on roller blinds?** - **A:** `Standard Roll` (default) feeds fabric off the back of the tube closest to the window/wall, minimising light leakage on outside-recess fits. `Reverse Roll` feeds fabric over the front of the tube, hiding the roll and adding clearance at the back to clear protruding window handles inside a recess. ### Installation, Operation & Troubleshooting - **Q: How does the Twist Fit (No-Drill) Roller blind install, which way do I turn the wheel, and what if the clutch is stiff?** - **A:** Lift the tensioner end into position inside a solid recess, lift the control (chain) end until level, and release so it holds itself in place. Check with a spirit level, then turn the tightening wheel: if the tightener is on the **left**, turn it **towards you**; if on the **right**, turn it **away from you**. If the chain clutch feels stiff to operate, the tightener is exerting too much pressure—back the wheel off slightly while ensuring the blind remains secure. - **Q: How do I lock a No-Drill Roman blind into the recess, and what surfaces are compatible?** - **A:** Turn the internal tightening tool **anticlockwise** (for default right-hand control) or **clockwise** (for left-hand control) until a click is heard. It is compatible with solid wood, PVC, and concrete recesses (up to 10kg max weight), and must **not** be installed on hollow plasterboard or unbacked surfaces. - **Q: How do I swap the control side or change the roll direction on a Roller blind?** - **A:** Before fitting brackets, pull the control sidewinder and idle pin out of the tube and swap ends. If fitted with a child safety chain connector (rather than a continuous loop), position the connector at the back of the loop for Standard Roll, or at the front of the loop for Reverse Roll. To change roll direction after installation, unroll the chain completely until the bare aluminium tube is exposed, hold the bottom bar taut, and continue rolling in the same direction so the fabric winds up the opposite side of the tube (note: this reverses which chain side raises/lowers the blind). - **Q: Which chain part raises and lowers Day & Night and Roman blinds?** - **A:** On **Day & Night blinds**, pull the chain closest to the window to lower, and the chain furthest from the window to raise. On **Roman blinds**, pull the front part of the chain to lower, and the rear part of the chain to raise. - **Q: How do I fix fabric "run-off" (fabric tracking/telescoping to one side) on a Roller or Day & Night blind?** - **A:** Unroll the fabric completely to expose the aluminium tube, place a 25mm piece of sticky tape onto the bare tube at the **opposite** end to the run-off, and wind the blind back up. Repeat until the fabric tracks evenly. - **Q: What should I do if my Day & Night blind fabric looks rippled?** - **A:** Use a spirit level to verify the cassette headbox is installed completely horizontally and check that the fabric is centred inside the headbox. - **Q: Why won't the slats tilt when I pull the tilt cords on my Wooden or Faux Wood Venetian blind?** - **A:** Set the slats to the fully open horizontal position and ensure both tilt cords are equal in length. Raise the blind completely to the top, lock it off, and remove the headrail from the brackets. Check inside the headrail and push the long metal tilt rod fully back into the tilting mechanism. - **Q: How should large/oversized Wooden and Faux Wood Venetian blinds be operated and removed?** - **A:** Always tilt slats to the horizontal (open) position before raising or lowering, and raise/lower heavy blinds in stages rather than one single motion to prevent excessive strain on cords and mechanisms. To lower, move the lift cord towards the middle of the blind; to lock, pull the lift cord towards the outside edge and release. To remove an Aluminium or Wooden Venetian blind, open the slats, raise the blind fully, push the front of the brackets along the headrail towards the window (or release the hinged gate on box/swivel brackets), and lift the headrail out. - **Q: How do I align Vertical blind louvre hooks that are facing different directions, and can I buy replacement slats?** - **A:** Before hanging the louvres, ensure all hooks face side-on. If any hooks are misaligned, pull the beaded chain (or twist the wand) until you feel resistance, then continue pulling past the noisy clicking (which is normal) until all hooks self-align in the same direction. Apply silicone-based lubricant spray inside the headrail periodically for smooth gliding. Individual replacement vertical louvres can be unclipped from the hangers and swapped without removing the headrail. ### Cleaning, Care & Child Safety Compliance - **Q: How do I clean PVC Waterproof, Faux Wood, Real Wood, Aluminium, and Roman blinds?** - **A:** - **Waterproof PVC (Roller/Vertical), Faux Wood & Aluminium Venetian:** Wipe down with lukewarm water, mild detergent/washing-up liquid, and a damp cloth or sponge. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive scourers. - **Real Wood Venetian:** Dust regularly with a microfibre cloth, feather duster, or low-suction vacuum brush. For marks, wipe gently with a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately—never soak natural wood. - **Roman Blinds:** Dust or vacuum folds with a soft brush attachment. For deep cleaning, Roman blind fabrics are **dry clean only**. Peel the fabric off the 25mm front Velcro strip and unclip the two-part rear detachable child safety cord clips; leave the internal 5mm fibreglass rods inside the pockets during dry cleaning. - **Q: What child safety devices and cord length rules apply under BS EN 13120?** - **A:** Every blind is supplied with compliant BS EN 13120 safety devices (P-Clip tensioners, Easybreak chain connectors, or Breakaway cord condensers and wall cleats). Installing supplied tensioners/cleats is a legal requirement under BS EN 13120. - **Safety Cleat Mounting & Spacing (Venetian, Wood, Faux Wood):** Mount cleats as close to the headrail as possible and at least 1500mm from the floor. Centre-to-centre spacing between two cleats by blind drop: 1–1000mm drop = 100mm | 1001–2000mm drop = 150mm | 2001–3000mm drop = 300mm. Wrap cords in a figure-of-8. - **Cord Length Formulas:** - **Wood & Faux Wood Venetians (accounting for 175mm tilt cord extension when closed):** Known install height = cords terminate ≥1675mm above floor (1500mm on Luxury Wood). Unknown install height = max cord length 825mm for drops <2500mm (1000mm on Luxury Wood), or Drop − 1675mm for drops ≥2500mm. - **Roller, Roman & Aluminium Venetians:** Known install height = chain/cord terminates 1500mm above floor (or 600mm–650mm deduction with Easybreak/Breakaway pulley systems). - **Q: How do I reconnect a separated breakaway cord condenser or safety tassel?** - **A:** Untwist and untangle the cords first. For 2 cords, press the two halves of the condenser/tassel together until clicked shut. For 3 cords, slot the single loose cord into the opening in one half and press shut. For 4 cords, place one loose cord into the opening of one half, the remaining loose cord into the other half, and press firmly together. Test by placing your arm between the cords and pressing downward—it should break apart with minimal horizontal force.
